Jan 11: Sugarcane Festival in Nacogdoches

Sugarcane ribbon candy demonstration
Durst Taylor House & Gardens
304 North St

Make plans to attend the 5th annual Old-Fashioned Sweet Tooth Sugarcane Festival on January 11 from 8 am -12 pm at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens

This historic house is home to a sugar cane field, which is harvested by the Historic Sites staff for the festival.

Using an 1800s mule-powered sugar cane press, the cane will be pressed and boiled down to make ribbon cane syrup. For those wishing to watch this process, plan on arriving early. To go along with the syrup, the Kiwanis Club will be making and selling pancakes with all the fixins’. All funds go to support their service projects in Nacogdoches.

The Durst Taylor Historic House and Gardens will be open for tours during the event. In addition an assortment of activities will be offered, including old fashioned crafts for children, a blacksmith demonstration, string music and a spinning demonstration. A local merchant, Mr. Dudley Mosely, will be on site selling his homemade ribbon cane syrup for those of you who would like to take some delicious syrup home with you.
