Dec 1-31: A Picture Perfect Holiday, Port Arthur

PORT ARTHUR, TX

Pack your bags and your camera for the winter wonderland at Holiday Inn Park Central, where toy soldiers, the Claus family and spirited monkeys make scenes that keep the spirit of Christmas alive.

With oversized nutcracker soldiers, cake-decorating seniors and a sneak into Mrs. Claus’ bedroom, hotelier Kathie Rachwal transforms the lobby into scenes of an old-fashioned holiday. Joe Schoolfield, manager, says families return yearly to take family portraits.

Peacocks nest in a four-seasons Christmas tree, a Nativity scene shares a joyful message and those snappily-clad nutcrackers welcome guests at the door.

Rachwal owns the hotel and works for weeks with her staff to bring on the sparkle. A festive party of nearly life-sized figures are set up to the left of the front desk while a vintage kitchen of grandparent-types are working to outdo each other with baked goods, icing and cookies. Over the years, Rachwal said she’s amazed that viewers offer to add little touches, such as their relative’s photos or period toys and serving ware, to the tableau. In another scene, Santa offers a present to his wife as she and her dogs cozy up in bed.

Port Arthur holiday visitors can also gather with family to view hundreds of Santas on view at Pompeiian Villa historical home and catch up on famous folk in the notables gallery of Museum of the Gulf Coast .
