Christmas
windows in downtown Mount Vernon are not only a treat for locals and visitors,
but a shining tribute to this community's heart and hard work.
For
the past 20 years, the city's Main Street has worked with the city’s Economic
Development Corporation, the Franklin County Historical Commission, downtown
building owners and local banks to develop an action plan for preservation.
“Preservation is not something that happens
overnight,” emphasizes Carolyn Teague, Mount Vernon Main Street Executive
Director. “It is a long-term commitment to preserving our sense of place.”
At
this time the City's Main Street and Economic Development Corporation have
assisted more than 40 businesses with their buildings. From volunteer labor, to
facade grants, matching funds and low-interest loans by local banks, the city
and citizens of Mount Vernon are setting the standard for community action,
historic preservation and downtown revitalization.
Mount
Vernon is one of only 9 cities to receive the First Lady's Texas Treasures
Award by First Lady Anita Perry and the Texas Historical Commission. The award
honors communities demonstrating a high level of creativity and ingenuity in
preservation and stewardship through local collaboration.
This
year, Mount Vernon Main Street was recognized for the 10th time as a state
commended and Nationally Accredited program.
