Mirrored and Obscured: Contemporary Texas Self-Portraits – January 18 - May 11, 2014

Mirrored and Obscured: Contemporary Texas Self-Portraits, organized by the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is a group exhibition examining a range of self-portraiture from artists all over Texas including Cedar Hill, Conroe, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Galveston, Lubbock, Nacogdoches and San Antonio. Self-portraits included in the exhibition are literal and non-literal. Portraits are in many different types of media: drawing, sculpture, painting, photography, and mixed media. The exhibit features 17 artists: Adela Andea, light sculpture; Debra Barerra, sculpture; Michael Bise, drawing; James Drake, mixed media drawings; Sharon Kopriva, sculpture; Laura Lark, drawing; Lawrence Lee, mixed media drawing; Mary McCleary, mixed media collage; Sherry Owens, sculpture; Sam Reveles, painting; Shaun Roberts, painting; Rusty Scruby, photographic reconstruction; Gael Stack, drawing; Kathy Vargas, hand-colored photography; Jonathan Whitfill, photography; Ann Wood, mixed media; and Xiaoze Xie, painting. Many of these artists are creating new pieces for the exhibit including: Debra Barrera, Sharon Kopriva, Sherry Owens, Shaun Roberts, Jonathan Whitfill, Ann Wood, and Xiaoze Xie.
A Vintage Affair Wine Tasting – 7:30-10 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014
A Vintage Affair is a wine tasting event. Tickets sell for $35.00 per person. Participants have the opportunity to taste a variety of red and white wines as well as champagne. The cost includes a sampling of artisanal cheeses, gourmet chocolates and assorted appetizers. Who's that in the Mirror Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014
This fun day will be about creating works of art inspired by ourselves while viewing the exhibit Mirrored and Obscured: Contemporary Texas Self-Portraits. In addition, audiences will have the opportunity to make cut-out silhouettes, Freedom hats, Lincoln hats, Mardi Gras masks and decorate a Valentine's Day cookie. Admission is FREE!!!
Protégé High School Art Competition and Exhibition

Protégé exhibition on view at AMSET – Feb. 22 through March 23, 2014
Protégé is a 28-year-old program organized annually to promote and inspire 12th-grade artists in our region. AMSET believes it is important that young artists have an early opportunity to enter art competitions and to learn museum exhibition practices. After the opening exhibit at AMSET, the works of art will tour regional schools from March 24 through May 9, 2014.
19th Annual Go for the Gold Party and Reverse Drawing – 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014
Each year AMSET invites community members to participate in Go for the Gold, a very popular and entertaining fundraising event. For the ticket cost of $100, participants receive admission, dinner and cocktails for two along with one entry into the most exciting drawing in town. Three lucky ticket-holders get a chance to win unbelievable prizes in gold, magically turning $100 into $10,000 for the first place winner in a reverse drawing where the winner is the last ticket drawn. Alternating years with the gARTage sale, this fundraiser centers around artists who are invited to create decorative works of art based on a theme – clocks, mirrors, frames etc. A cocktail party, live auctioneer and tickets sold for around $35.00 contribute to the success of this fundraiser.
Karin Broker: wired, drawn, and nailed – May 24- August 31, 2014
Opening Reception: 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2014
The exhibition wired, drawn, and nailed is organized by the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. This Houston-based artist's exhibition will be comprised of collages, large drawings, wired objects and large boxes. Although this exhibition does not include direct printmaking per se, all of the artwork is either informed by printmaking or incorporates preprinted materials. Her drawings on Formica panels, for example, are formulated by using a similar process used in lithography. Preprinted materials such as vintage printed metals are used in collages and assemblage box constructions.
Beili Liu: Opposing Forces – May 24 -August 31, 2014

Beili Liu, Associate Professor at the College of Fine Arts, University of Texas at Austin, will create a site-specific installation with materials suspended from the gallery ceiling. Her work strikes a balance between old-school emotion and progressive innovation. Her ingenious use of materials and process are a blend of Eastern and Western sensibilities.
Opposing Forces Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2014
In conjunction with the exhibition Beili Liu: Opposing Forces and the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, this Family Arts Day will encompass arts projects inspired by the site specific installations of exhibiting artist, Beili Liu as well as traditional art forms of Mexico. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in a collaborative installation, as well as papel picado and paper tissue flowers. Face painting and refreshments will round out a wonderful event. Admission is FREE!!!

Summer ArtVentures Creative Kids Camp – June 16 - July 18, 2014
At AMSET's popular summer camp, children ages 4-14 can choose from many class options for high quality, intensive art education experiences taught by professional artists. Campers are divided into three age groups for the week-long classes, with each course designed for age-appropriate art activities. Don't Mess with Texas, Mess with Art Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014
Visitors will explore a range of media including recycled materials to emulate the work in the concurrent exhibition Karin Broker; wired, drawn, and nailed. This Family Arts Day will include fun, kid-friendly materials such as sequins, glitter and paint and even common everyday found items such as sticks to give everyone the opportunity to create wonderful works of art with nontraditional materials. Face painting and refreshments round out this wonderful event. Admission is FREE!!!
